Dear Prof Cooper,
Happy New Year!
I’m interested in the influence – subliminal or conscious – that a senior manager may have on a middle manager’s assessment of one of his work colleagues/line reports – perhaps in a promotion, redundancy or disciplinary situation.
Has much work been done on this area? For example, could a bias be quantified in the case that a senior manager was considerably more positively predisposed towards a candidate for promotion than the individual’s line manager – in terms of how a line manager may qualify (revise up) his/her own scoring/assessment of the individual? Or perhaps in a redundancy situation, where the senior manager is particularly disposed to score down one candidate than the individual’s line manager – what % difference (revision downwards) might this be expected to carry through to the Line Manager’s own assessment scores, if any?
Is there anything I could read about this – online?
Very best wishes for an enjoyable 2010!
Rob
Many congratulations for demonstrating the fallibility of the CEO of the National Bullying Helpline and thereby her incompetence in the task of running a centre for people who need help. Please add your skills to Bullying UK which clearly has the right apolitical approach to your vital work.
