I don't think employers are trained or taught to care, as in they don't feel they have to. Especially in this economy, employees are deemed replaceable with hundreds of people willing to take a vacated position! It shifts the power dynamic, even if it's not just about power, but work productivity and effectiveness. It's a mutual relationship; if the employer cares and listens to their employee, the employee will feel more valued and thus work harder to make the office and company succeed.

Mental health is hard to determine, fix, or necessarily take care of. The results or methods are concrete or tangible, like physical health, and might a lot more trial and error and work. But I agree that it is just as important as physical health, if not more so, since once your mind goes, the body will follow suit.

I love this article! And I couldn't agree more about failure and the possibility of making a mistake holding people back from dreaming, chasing goals, or doing anything challenging in life. It's the "why bother" mentality. Once we realize that making mistakes is not only normal, but almost a rite of passage on the way to success in the future, people will be a lot more happier and resilient, in all areas of our lives.

A Vice Chancellor in a Bank? I don't think so! I have worked for American, Swiss, German, and English banks, and I have never heard of a vice chancellor working there. I was a Vice president at the American Bank (in the others I was a self employed board level consultant, which is higher in reality), but I never encountered a vice chancellor. However, I do recognise the picture painted by your correspondent. The trouble with banks is they only recognise two factors of motivation - Fear and Greed. They miss the desire to do a good job, be recognised for it - and especially, to be praised praised for it.

Cary, you could draw similarities with this narrative and the organisational paradigm modelled via cultural audit. It provides a great lens through which to view well-being. It also illustrates how different sectors may see and address the issues in a variety of manners.

so right you are - make the employer give support - as a public employee myself (through a "company" which is actually funded by the taxpayer through skills funding etc. , etc.) which is actually being awarded public service contracts worth 3, 4 or 5 million pound contracts in my workplace alone- who then tries to pay skilled and certified employees the minimum wage - sorry , you should not have to leave your place of employment because the manager disagrees with an economic decision made by yourself -get some backbone and fight back
good luck
best regards
