As a generalizable experience, the positive transformation of failure to build resilience is something that can easily be embraced in art. We find that art-making provides an effective microcosm where individuals can make mistakes and work through them without the 'big risk'.
As an academic and a 'well-being' psychologist who is also a full-time working mum, the issues raised here are very familiar. I am also sorry to have to admit that I am not surprised to hear that the UK is positioned so low on the scale. What is also interesting is that I am now starting to hear about organisations putting a stop to people working from home and re-enforcing the concept of 'presenteeism' as a way of improving performance! It makes me start to wonder whether all that research which I, as just one of many, spent many days of work-life 'imbalance' on, was all worth while. It's certainly not been good for my well-being knowing this.

Was he sacked for being depressed though Cary? It sounds from his dismissal letter that he was sacked (or his probation period not renewed) for not bringing in any sales, and admitting that this was not likely to change.

Isn't this what probation periods are for? To see if employer and employee are a good fit for each other?

It appears common sense to assume poverty will result in unhappiness, but is wealth indicative of authentic happiness? One would suggest not, for all the reasons Prof Cooper mentions above. However, what amounts to a definition of these two extremes in Britain today is a contentious issue. Global comparisons may assist in resolving these perspectives and facilitate a reality check for many. I am not advocating we should all be content with our respective lot; but are we in such financial dire straits that we need to give up on life?

I would say this completely depends on the industry and size of a business, generally i feel large business often get sloppy on business practices and smaller business often fail to understand they must apply themselves with the same amount of professionalism as a larger business.

Dr. Cooper,

I'm an Organizational Behavior Management student at the University of Kansas. I was really impressed at how meticulous the statistical studies were carried out by the office for national statistics. I was especially surprised at their sensitivity to order effects and the slightest confounds like the interviewer being present when respondents used the laptops.

What do you think the main function of this data should be for such large scale subjective questions?
